In this speaking test sample, the speaker pronounces the ‘a’ in ‘travel’ with the diphthong
sound /eI/
rather than the correct vowel sound /æ/.
Teacher (T): Tina, I noticed that you pronounced the ‘a’ in ‘travel’
with the diphthong sound /eI/ instead of the pure vowel
sound /æ/.
Tina (S): Oh, I see. Can you explain to me how to do it
properly?
T: To make the sound, you must drop your jaw so your mouth
opens quite a bit, pull back the corners of your lips and relax your tongue,
like your are surprised. Like this: /æ/ (repeat sound twice.) Now you try.
S: OK, /ʌ/ (twice)
T: That’s close, but you must pull the sides of your mouth back,
like you smiling, but not too much.
S: /æ/ (twice)
T: Good, that’s it! Now put it in the word ‘travel’, and then use
it in a sentence.
S: I understand: /trævəl/ . I want to travel!
T: That’s great! Now practice a little on your own, and think of
some other words with that sound that you can also practice with.
